20 Years Later: Concentrates Then & Now

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since the beginning of the new millennium. Within the scope of recorded history this doesn’t seem to be that long of a timeframe, however the world is certainly quite different from how things were in the time of ‘Y2K’. We’re not exactly in the era of flying cars just yet, but exponential growth within technology, culture, telecom, food production, and virtually every other industry is undeniable. The cannabis industry has surely exploded; 2020 is looking like it will break records when it comes to revenue, and the flow shows no signs of stopping any time soon.

The WaxNax team is fully invested in being highly informed about the latest and best innovations/developments on the market, while also being educated when it comes to the past of cannabis and its many forms. We believe that knowledge of what has come before can go a long way to guide us into the future. Keep reading as we discuss concentrates in relation to where they’ve been, where they are, and where they’re yet to go.

Late 90s/Early 2000s

As a nation, Americans really began to see the light in the late 1990s. California’s Proposition 215 which finally protected “patients and defined caregivers” from prosecution — was the first official signal that pointed to imminent and significant change. But although the door to innovation was now open, concentrates as they appear today were a long way from being actualized. While we can make the case that hashish in its classic form was the precursor of modern day dabs, it would take a few more years until the prospect of butane hash oil (BHO) extraction became a reality.

The ‘Medical’ Era

In the next 10+ years: Hawaii, Alaska, D.C., Oregon, Washington, Maine, Colorado, Nevada, Montana, Vermont, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Michigan, New Jersey, and Arizona would follow California’s lead into medical legalization. Since there were less restrictions, and therefore more opportunities for innovation, it was during this time that concentrates as we know them today had their chance to develop and begin to flourish. Free from unfair prosecution, local growers/entrepreneurs were able to take previously “underground” techniques and perfect them in new and exciting ways.

2010 & Beyond

The heady gestation period of the 2000s paved the way for the real breakthroughs that came just a few years later. With major publicity coming from coverage via such ‘high’ profile outlets as High Times Cannabis Cup, concentrates and their associated products steadily began to pop up in mainstream cannabis culture. New vaporizer technology was being advertised more frequently, and classic dab-ables such as Chemblend Solventless Wax – (Elemental, Essential Extracts & Johnny Trill), Lemon Cleaner OG Nectar – (TCLabs/TerpX/EmoTex), and Oasis Medical Seeds’ – (Paris OG Shatter Dab Vader) were winning awards. The secret was certainly out; since then we’ve come to know other dab favorites like resin, crumble, bubble hash, crystalline and many other stellar concentrate variations.

The way things are trending, we believe the future of cannabis concentrates burns bright. In the next few years we hope to see healthier solvents and extraction techniques with an increased emphasis on sustainability. With more and more research being conducted throughout the legal cannabis spectrum, scientists are illuminating new beneficial phytocannabinoids on a regular basis. We hope to see these compounds introduced and properly utilized so that we may be able to provide you with the latest and best self-care products.
