Exploring the World of Cannabinoids

When people talk about cannabis, THC and CBD usually get most of the attention. They are the two cannabinoids most consumers recognize, but the cannabis plant contains more than 100 identified cannabinoids, each with its own characteristics and potential role in the overall cannabis experience.

As cannabis products become more sophisticated, minor cannabinoids like CBG, CBN, CBC, and THCV are showing up more frequently on dispensary shelves and product labels. Understanding what they are can help consumers look beyond THC percentage and start paying attention to the bigger cannabinoid picture.

What Are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant. They interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, a biological system involved in processes such as mood, appetite, sleep, pain perception, and immune response.

THC is best known for its intoxicating effects, while CBD is generally associated with non intoxicating cannabis products. But these are only two pieces of a much larger puzzle.

Meet the Minor Cannabinoids

CBG, or cannabigerol, is sometimes referred to as the “mother cannabinoid” because CBGA serves as a precursor to several major cannabinoids during plant development. While CBG products are becoming increasingly common, research into its potential effects is still developing.

CBN, or cannabinol, is another cannabinoid gaining attention. It forms as THC degrades over time and is often associated with products marketed toward relaxation and nighttime use. However, many of the claims surrounding CBN are still being investigated, so it is worth separating emerging research from marketing.

THCV, or tetrahydrocannabivarin, has a molecular structure similar to THC but can produce noticeably different effects. It is particularly interesting because it interacts with cannabinoid receptors differently than traditional THC.

Then there is CBC, or cannabichromene, which receives considerably less attention but is another naturally occurring cannabinoid researchers continue to investigate.

Why Minor Cannabinoids Matter

The growing interest in minor cannabinoids represents a shift in how consumers think about cannabis. Instead of simply asking, “How much THC is in it?” consumers can start asking, “What else is in it?”

Two concentrates with similar THC percentages can have completely different cannabinoid profiles. One might contain meaningful amounts of CBG, while another could contain more CBN or other minor cannabinoids.

Those differences can contribute to how products are experienced and are one reason cannabis can feel different from one product to another, even when the THC percentage looks almost identical.

Next time you’re shopping for flower or concentrates, take a few extra seconds to look beyond the big THC number.

Check the cannabinoid breakdown. Look for CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, THCV, and other cannabinoids when the information is available. Lab testing can provide a much clearer picture of what’s actually inside the product.

The more you learn about these compounds, the easier it becomes to identify products based on the experience and profile you’re looking for rather than simply choosing the highest THC percentage.
